Oslo
Easter in Oslo! We had a splendid long weekend, with summer-like temperatures and sunshine, which was a real blessing as it made it possible for us to spend most of our time out and about. We paid a visit to Vigeland's sculpture park - dozens of large stone or bronze statues depicting human and family life, impressive, fun and unique -, we walked through the Royal Palace's gardens, had a look at the new Opera House, went on a boat to Bygdoy to explore the Norsk Folkmuseum, we ate lots of waffles with jam, passed the Ibsen museum which was closed, like many others, but it did not matter too much since the weather was so fine.
Oslo is Scandinavian, no doubt about it, but seemed less so than Stockholm, strangely enough. More gritty and continental, maybe less spotless than Sweden, in appearence anyway. It was good to go away for a few days, to try out our Swedish, which Norwegians understood without any difficulty while we were a bit bemused when then replied in their own language... Not cheap, as we expected it, but friendly.
One of the best bits as well was meeting up with our old friends Graeme and Ellin - last seen in London some 15 years ago when they left us their flat as they were moving to Norway! We were spoiled and got invited back to their house for dinner - to Lili, Poppy and Otto's joy, all three loved playing with Thomas and Maria, both a little bit older than them (Waow! Big children...!!! And a big trampolin! Great!).
Weird to be back, already almost a week into work. The city here feels on holiday, nobody can believe we still had snow less than three weeks ago!
